This was the original draft of the his 'non-eulogy' I had written for him:
"It is at John's request that there be no eulogy for him at his solemn Requiem. No glowing tributes, no matter how touchingly and movingly felt. Difficult though this may be for those still in mourning and remembering him, there is a special reason for this.
So I will therefore not rhapsodise today, on the life of a human soul, his birth in wartime, his working class upbringing, and a courageous conversion to Catholicism whilst still at school. Nor of a nurturing of that faith, working at the principal Catholic cathedral in this country, followed by perhaps the greatest fortune, to there meet his future wife, and their resultant children.
Nor to recourse to his numerous other vocations, whether in the postal service, or in more recent times, a knowledge of computers that extended to becoming a lecturer, and in the autumn years of life, an assistant exam invigilator. Nor of his many other interests and hobbies and affections. Nothing that would infer that this soul's place in Heaven is assured, when there is that far greater journey, on which he has now embarked.
No, instead, he asks you all to pray for the repose of his soul, and the hope of the everlasting glory still to come. Amen"

I am I and you are you, whatever we were to each other that we still are.
Speak to me in the easy way which you always used.
Why should I be out of mind because I am out of sight?
Life means all that it ever meant, it is the same as it ever was.
